Appreciate the Journey

December 01, 2016 DR. SHARON BUCHALTER

You wake up one morning, turn over, check for the time, but notice something that catches your eye… The date. The date rings a bell. It’s the 1 year Anniversary - of your marriage, of the launch of your business venture, the of your start at a new job, etc. One year working consistently on a certain thing is something to be very proud of, and something to be very happy about. Think about the next anniversary of anything you have coming up or one that just passed as you read this article!

Gratitude

The first thing you have to do when thinking about the history of the past year that just occurred is to truly be grateful for what just happened. Whether you married the love of your life, finally started that company you’ve been thinking about for five years, or landed your dream job - all of these are something to be very grateful for. Don’t get me wrong though, this year might have been hard. Your big decision or event might have come at the cost of other relationships or opportunities. But, you have to take a look at what this past year has gained you, not what it has lost you. Smile for the things you have and be grateful for all that you have achieved.

Lessons

Learning is an essential part of growing and developing as a human being. There’s no doubt in my mind that this last year of your life has taught you a lot. Whether it was how to be in a marriage, run a company, or work at a new job. Lessons are what build you up and what force you to become a bigger and better person. Embrace every single learning experience that comes your way. Each opportunity that is thrown in your direction, is there for a reason, to help you grow. Sometimes it’s hard to see all of the progress you have made in this past year. So, try this: take a pen and paper and write down the past 12 months at the top. Write out a paragraph of any crucial steps that were taken during each of the months! This will help you reflect, learn from your past and see how much you have grown.

Next Steps

Okay, so this year just flew by and you are in a new place in your life. Your relationships have developed, you’ve developed, and you’re continuing to grow each and every day. The best thing for you to do now that you are celebrating a year of straight progress, is to keep focusing on the future. Keep focusing on the things that push you and the things that make you pop out of bed every morning.

Appreciate everything that comes your way - both the good and the bad. Why? Because both are part of the journey. Everything that is thrown your way changes you and builds you into the person you are today. So, embrace it all - every step.
